Some sample projects we viewed in the lecture

12月 10, 2009

We have viewed some sample projects during the lecture. They were awarded as Class A projects. These samples gave me some idea about how to design my project. Firstly, a good project contains different elements from various subjects we have learned during the year of master study. We will need to consider different aspects such as interaction design,  visual communication, technical feasibility, research methods and so on. Second point is trying to be more creative, and to think about something new.  My idea is to make a flash, which can be practically used by the college. Before i decide the topic, i am going to do some research and make sure it can be done within the deadline.

Social tennis day

5月 9, 2009

I joined a social tennis event yesterday night at Mount Plesent Tennis Club. It was a really nice play. The club mixed people up to play mix double. It was a great way to know people who have common interest – tennis. It was an easy match as nobody was caring win or loss, we were just enjoying a Friday night. I would like to participate events like that. However, i also want to play with higher level people – just to keep myself practiced and seek some improvement on my skill.

I love lots of sports, tennis, football, snooker, basketball etc…anyone in Dublin want to find a partner to play these sports, just count me in!!!

Swine flu

As we can see from above picture, more countries are infected by the swine flu. UK has confirmed several cases.  However, Key messages from health department were that all cases outside Mexico, the symptoms of this illness are mild and all patients have made a full recovery. So hopefully Ireland will be ok.

Just post some Health and hygiene advices here:

The advice from the NHS is that preventing the spread of germs is the single most effective way to slow the spread of diseases like pandemic flu. You can protect yourself and your family by ensuring everyone washes their hands regularly with soap and water, and by cleaning surfaces regularly.

You can prevent a virus spreading to others by:

  • always carrying tissues
  • using tissues to cover your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze
  • binning the tissues as soon as possible
  • washing your hands regularly.

I love tennis

4月 24, 2009

tennis_magazine_china_october_2007_tennis_terracotta_warriorsSmall tips first:

What is the origin of ‘love’ meaning ‘nil’ in tennis scoring”?

Answer:

(a) “to play for love” and (b) “love” = nil in tennis (love-set; love-game, etc.)

Oxford English Dictionary seems to support this view.

I have learnt Tennis for five years and i love it! However, Dublin’s weather seems not to support this game – rainy and windy make outdoor Tennis impossible. As summer is coming soon i hope i can play it quite often, just to keep myself practiced. I would like to join Lansdowne tennis club in D4. They hold social competitions every Thuesday. Just to play with different partners. I think this is a good way to know friends and also keep myself improved.

I am looking forward the summer’s coming~~~~

The “happy” class at Havard

4月 17, 2009

Positive Psychology taught by Tal Ben-Shahar is the most popular class at Havard. It teaches students how to become happier! yup, can you imagine…that’s havard.

Six Happiness Tips

Advice from Tal Ben-Shahar Image

  • 1.Give yourself permission to be human. When we accept emotions — such asfear, sadness, or anxiety — as natural, we are more likely to overcomethem. Rejecting our emotions, positive or negative, leads tofrustration and unhappiness.

  • 2.Happiness lies at the intersection between pleasure and meaning.Whether at work or at home, the goal is to engage in activities thatare both personally significant and enjoyable. When this is notfeasible, make sure you have happiness boosters, moments throughout theweek that provide you with both pleasure and meaning.

  • 3.Keep in mind that happiness is mostly dependent on our state of mind, not on our status or the state of our bank account. Barring extremecircumstances, our level of well being is determined by what we chooseto focus on (the full or the empty part of the glass) and by ourinterpretation of external events. For example, do we view failure ascatastrophic, or do we see it as a learning opportunity?

  • 4.Simplify! We are, generally, too busy, trying to squeeze in more andmore activities into less and less time. Quantity influences quality, and we compromise on our happiness by trying to do too much.

  • 5.Remember the mind-body connection. What we do — or don’t do — with ourbodies influences our mind. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, andhealthy eating habits lead to both physical and mental health.

  • 6.Express gratitude, whenever possible. We too often take our lives forgranted. Learn to appreciate and savor the wonderful things in life, from people to food, from nature to a smile.

Among the six tips, no.1 is what I always have.  For the rest of them, i totally understand but just hard to achieve.

My view on Ireland’s Emergency Budget

4月 17, 2009

brianlenihanOn 9 April 2009, Ireland’s government announced a painful emergency budget in order to bring deficit in line. The emergency budget includes to double income tax surcharge, cut spending and created a toxic asset company to house banks’ bad debts.

In my opinion, this budget plan will have significant influence on middle-income families with three or more children. Spending cuts, if approved, would include a reduction in social welfare such as reducing the allowances paid to the young unemployed, eliminating of Christmas bonuses and cutting family benefits. This is an unacceptable budget to people as unemployment rate reaches the highest record therefore more people are claiming social welfare. The cutting on public spending makes their positions more dangerous. It may result in more crimes to be happened and have negative effect on social safety.

Fabulouse Robbie Keane

4月 2, 2009

Yesterday’s match was a great magic giving Ireland equalised world champion Italy in the last 3 minutes. Robbie Keane became hero again to bring more hope to Ireland to qualifiy the worldcup. From my point of view there is no doubt that Italy and Ireland will be the final two teams that go ahead to worldcup final. Italy’s defense is definitely world number one, together with the world best goal keeper Buffon.  However, Italy is formed by 11 men who are all aged 30+. Will they be able to fight against young players from elsewhere in 2010? I really doubt about their performance in 2010. World champion has became a history. Italy should seek more development on their next generation players.

Culture difference between Ireland and China

3月 28, 2009

As the oldest and most complex culture in the world, Chinese culture is deeply rooted in China’s long history. Culture difference between China and Ireland appears in many aspects such as family value, education, food and so on. As i worked part time in a nursing home, i saw many elder who are lack of familiy’s care, i would like to share some thoughts on culture difference in relation to family value.

Families in China operates in a different fashion to Ireland. Because of one-child policy, Chinese parents are willing to give everything to their children. Parents will spend a fortune to fund their children  to study abroad, or buying a home for them. Meanwhile, parents share a significant pary in children’s lives. Many parent live with their children when children get married and parents will look after their grandsons or granddaughters as well. In China, parents are having much closer link with their children than western countries. In Ireland, however, each generation tends to be more independent than China. Parents in Ireland normally support their children up tp 18 years old. Also parents live independently with their children. They do not need children to fund their lives as they normally have pension or retirement benefits. Once they are not able to look after themselves, they probably will choose to live in nursing home.
